All You Need to Know about Phoenix Area Codes

‘Phoenix is the capital and most populous city of Arizona.’ It is the only state capital in America with a splendid number of population, something near about more than one million residents. It is also known as the Valley of Sun. Phoenix area codes include – 602, 480 and 623.

North American area code 602, is a state of Arizona telephone area code that covers most of the city of Phoenix. It was one of the original area codes, established in October 1947 and originally covered the entire state of Arizona until 1995, when the area code 520, was found as the state’s second area code.’ Since there was an increased demand for telephone communications, fax exchange and many more, the area code 520 was introduced because too much pressure on the area code 602, would lead to its exhaustion. However, the single area code 520, also could not solve the problem of the extreme pressure, so craving paths towards multiple area codes required a decision for an overlay. It was during that time, when a split in the geographical area was essentially established, and it came into effect from April 1, 1999. ‘ Generally, 480 served the East Valley while 623, served the West Valley. Most areas of Phoenix remained in 602, but a few areas ( such as Ahwatukee neighbourhood and parts of Maryvale ) transferred to 480 or 623. This split resulted in Phoenix becoming one of the few major cities in the nation to be split between multiple area codes. Only two cities ended with multiple area codes with this change. While this also made Phoenix one of the few major cities not to be overlaid, ten-digit dialling is now necessary for certain areas of the metro area.
